HOW
TO WRITE THE WINNING COLLEGE
APPLICATION ESSAY, Michael
James Mason. Having just
completed our first round of college
applications, I now know how
important writing skills are for
admittance and for
scholarships. The money is for
the articulate folks, and here is
the best book I found addressing
this issue. Michael James
Mason gives students the edge they
need in the admissions process by
providing step-by-step techniques,
insights from college admissions
professionals and samples of essays
that have succeeded.

SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY
EFFECTIVE TEENS,Sean Covey. This book really does show teens how to develop a winning
mind-set, and strategically manage their lives for a higher purpose. I don't agree
with the heavy dose of self-esteem teaching that permeates, but replacing these sections
with the confidence that comes from knowing who you are in the Lord makes the book quite
helpful. It's an easy read as well.

TIME MANAGEMENT FOR
UNMANAGEABLE PEOPLE. Both Barb Heisey and Cindy McKeown (our office manager and
director of CHESS family school, respectively) insist I carry this book which they both
have used to organized their anonymous but unmanageable loved ones. Especially pertinent
for teens.

WHAT SMART STUDENTS
KNOW,
Adam Robinson, co- founder of The Princeton Review. This is the book to use if you
want to stimulate independent learning in your older children. Thankfully it's very
entertaining so they shouldn't fuss too much. Intended as a survival guide for high school
and college students, it lucidly presents the repertoire of strategies and resources your
kids can use everyday to maximize their learning. A very interesting tidbit as well:
Robinson acknowledges the late John Holt as well as John Gatto as his mentors in
educational philosophy. So he's bowling right up the homeschool community's alley.
